The Bicyclist, James

I used to stop at the same gas station every night on the way home from work. It became part of the routine. I would pull in, grab a twelve pack, and drive the rest of the way home. By the time I finished dinner I would open the first one and work my way through the rest of them during the evening. It felt normal at the time. I told myself it was just how I unwound after work.

There were other things I used to do that slowly disappeared. I had a bicycle I rode most weekends. Nothing serious. Just long rides on the trails outside town. At some point the rides got shorter and then they stopped. The bike stayed in the garage. Camping was another thing I used to like. My wife and I would go a few times a year. I started making excuses when the trips involved long hikes. I told her my knees were bothering me or that I had too much work to do.

Looking back now it is pretty clear what was happening. Drinking every night made everything else feel like too much effort. If a trip meant being out on a trail all day or not having beer around, I found a reason not to go.

My wife noticed the changes before I did. She would ask about the bike or suggest we plan a camping trip. I usually brushed it off. Eventually she stopped asking and started telling me she was worried about how much I was drinking. I told her I had it under control. That went on for a while.

The conversation that finally got my attention was pretty simple. She said she did not want to live like that anymore and that if I did not get help she was going to leave. It was not dramatic. She was calm when she said it. That probably made it sink in more.

I checked into a rehab program a couple weeks later and stayed there for twenty eight days. The first few days were uncomfortable but after a while I started to feel more like myself again. I spent a lot of time walking and thinking about how small my life had become without me noticing.

When I got home the bike was still in the garage. I cleaned it up and started riding again. I have not stopped at that gas station since.
